Justin Duty, James, Pompe, And Jones Historical Night Winners

For the first time ever Willamette Speedway would host a Historical Night which dedicated the evening to reflecting the long history the track has produced as well as inducting the first class into the Hall Of Fame. Classes in action at the historic 1/3-mile clay oval on Saturday July 12th were the X-Factor Race Cars Super Late Models, Crocker’s Cars Super Sports, Albany & Eastern Railroad Sportsman, and the 4-Cylinders.

Before we get into any of the race recaps we would like to congratulate the inaugural class into the Willamette Speedway Hall Of Fame. The 2014 inductees are Clair and Evelyn Arnold, Granny Erp, George Waters, Don Wilson, Don Eyerly, Jerry York, Dorla Van Epps, Mark Howard, Terry Bentley, and the Highwallers Racing Team.

In the X-Factor Race Cars Super Late Model main event defending track champion Trevor Glaser of Tangent made an appearance driving for Darren Coffell of Bend in the Driving Force Graphics/Tubeshark Tube Bender/Clements Racing Engines #46 Rocket. Glaser would lose the position shortly after a restart with Justin Duty able to make the right move at the right time to seize the spot. Justin Duty, of Happy Valley and driving the Don Frank Flooring/Big Sky Landscaping/Mid Ohio Graphics/Metro Services #15 Rocket, would keep all challengers in check as he would go on to win his second race of the season.

Finishing behind him in second would be Justin Duty’s father, John who also is from Happy Valley, in his Don Frank Flooring/Mid Ohio Graphics/Metro Services/Darren and Mardell Williams #5 Rocket while in third would be the J&S Farms/Cornett Racing Engines/Tim Logan Racing #37 Rocket of Rob Mayea from Bend. Trevor Glaser would place fourth followed in fifth by Portland’s Brian Cronk in his Metro Services/Dog Lover’s Gold Dog Food/Big Sky Landscaping #29 Rocket to make it a complete Rocket Chassis top five.

In the Crocker’s Cars Super Sports Woodland, Washington driver Jerry Casey would pace the field early in his Swan Island Sandblasting #61 entry. Casey would have problems that would give the lead to Sodaville’s Danny Altom. Altom, in the Clayton’s Cornwell Tools/Rebekah’s Barber Shop/County Girls Quilting/Randy Boyd Inc. #5 Rayburn, would blaze the trail for some time until he would get passed shortly after a restart.

The driver that would make the move would be non-other than Bricen James of Albany. The James Gang Pizza/Lebanon Auto Body/Sign Express/Rainbow Rentals/Schram Brothers Excavating #13 MasterSbilt, of James, would keep his machine out in front and also kept a fast Gil Pickett behind him. For James it would be his fifth win of the season in the division, and his tenth at Willamette overall, in what has been a dream season for the teenager.

Salem’s Gil Pickett would cross the wire in second in the Gil Pickett Custom Cabinets/G&B Natural Health/Airport Steel/Santiam Barn & Supply #98 Swartz followed by Albany’s Randy Barley in the Dennis Automotive & Tire/Lebanon Auto Body/Charlie James Racing Graphics #13B Rayburn. The Woodworking Enterprises/Airport Steel/Five Star Drywall #16 Rayburn of Chris Mott from Salem was fourth while Danny Altom ended the evening in fifth.

Obtaining the lead around the halfway mark Briley Pompe of Philomath was in search of his second win of the season in the Albany & Eastern Railroad Sportsman. Pompe would receive quite a bit of pressure from Danny Altom, doing double duty and driving the Glen Hackeny owned Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #3 Swartz, but Altom would run out of time. The win would be a big one for Pompe and the X-Factor Race Cars/The Storage Depot/Lawson Chassis #0P Lawson team as he is now tied with most wins this year with four other drivers in the class.

Danny Altom would finish in second while the Goetz Racing #38 Rayburn of Brian Goetz from Lyons was third. Brian Winkler out of Newberg would end the evening in fourth in his Flatt Muffler & Custom Exhaust/Doerfler Farms/Zosel Sheds #88 Rayburn while completing the top five was Lebanon’s Glen Hackney in the Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #2 Swartz.

Last but certainly not least the 4-Cylinders were in the house. The division would produce the oldest winner on the night. Twenty-year old Bo Jones from Troutdale would take care of business to become the third different winner on the campaign. Jones, driving his Mark’s Towing and Transport #82 Dodge Neon, would lead all the laps of the main event.

The DCM Trucking #18 entry of Dale Holland was second while third place would go to Becca Parsons from Lebanon in the Clayton's Cornwell Tools/The Knothole Market/Rebekha’s Barber Shop #17 Ford Ranger. The #11 of Kris Krebs was fourth and the #77 of Joseph Whitaker would place fifth.

Willamette Speedway will return to racing on Friday July 18th for the sixth race of the season for the Karts while on Saturday the 19th will be the return of the Coors Clay Cup. Classes on the card include the X-Factor Race Cars Super Late Models, Crocker’s Cars Super Sports, Albany & Eastern Railroad Sportsman, and Street Stocks.

General admission to the Friday Kart race will be FREE of charge. Pit Passes are $10.00 and Car and Driver fees will be $30.00. The Pit Gate will open up around 4:00 PM and Racing is scheduled to begin around 6:30.

On Saturday the Pit Gates will open at 1:00 PM, the Pit Meeting will take place at 2:30, Front Gates open at 3:30, and Racing starts at 6:00. Tickets for this event are Adults $12.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $10.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $5.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE and a family pass will be offered for two Adults and up to four Youths for just $35.00.
