2014 should be a very interesting year for the Street Stocks at Willamette Speedway. This year the division title is pretty much up for grabs with last year’s champion David Cronk not defending his title and Bricen James not focusing on one particular class. With it wide open expect to see a new champion wear the crown by season’s end. In 2014 there are thirteen races over the course of the campaign.
“It’s a tough class to race in and I think it will come down to the driver who want to win it the most,” commented Willamette Speedway Announcer Cory Penfold, ‘it is a great class for guys wanting to get their racing career started too.”
Started as a brand new class in 2005 the Street Stock division was originally known as the Classic Sportsman is until it was renamed in 2013. There have been seven different champions in the nine years of the existence of the class. David Cronk and Kyle Yeack are tied for most titles with two apiece.
Last season David Cronk and Bricen James dominated the Street Stock ranks. Cronk and James would win a combined eleven events out of the sixteen races in 2013. Cronk led the win column with seven victories over James’ four while Kevin Roberts managed to win an impressive three features. Randy Jackson and Justin Evans were the only other two main event winners with one triumph each.
2012 was the year Kyle Yeack owned the competition both in the Street Stocks and Modifieds. Yeack would win eight Street Stock features including the Iron Giant Challenge that August. He would also post an impressive twelve top five finishes in fourteen starts. David Cronk was the only other multi-feature winner that year with his two victories while drivers with just one win included Adam Walker, J.J. Irvine, Erik Jarnport, and Kevin Roberts.
2011 would see a tight point battle between youngsters Justin Duty and Kyle Yeack’s older brother Cory. Cory would manage to edge out Justin in points despite not winning the most races but what did help is that he was able to lead the class in the most quick time awards and finish among the top five eleven times in eighteen starts. Justin Duty would lead the win column with his four victories over Cory Yeack’s three. Sean Cronk and Tim Cramlett managed to win two main events each while Dave Kingsberry, Randy Boyd, Adam Walker, Justin Evans, Bill Allison, Jeff Lovell, and J.J. Irvine all visited the winner’s circle once.
