The American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region entered Lebanon, Oregon’s Willamette Speedway on Wednesday July 2nd with twenty-seven machines on hand. The event marked the fifth round of the 2013 Bully Dog Performance Speedweek Northwest presented by Contingency Connection.

With the right side tires rarely leaving the high side cushion outside pole sitter Travis Rilat would deliver car owner Richard Samure his second win of Speedweek and in dominating fashion in front of a packed house. The Forney, Texas native in the Xtreme Oilfield Technologies/Carlan Services #39C Maxim would lead all thirty laps and would be seriously challenged on just one occasion. That challenge came on the final restart when Shane Stewart would make a diving move to the bottom of turns one and two but Rilat was just too quick up top.

“Last year at the National race we lead twenty-nine and a quarter laps but tipped it up into the fence in turns one and two,” commented Rilat in victory lane, “I had déjà vu tonight when the white flag came out and there were three lapped cars in front of us. I would like to thank Richard Samure for giving me the opportunity to drive this race car we’ve got an amazing program.”

The contest for second produced some good battles during the race. Young Zack Spaulding from Springfield, Oregon had a career best night running second most of the race, in the Myers Logging/Armstrong Contract Cutting/Peterson CAT #21T XXX driving for Sam and Tony Myers, and staying in stride with the front runners. After starting on the pole Spaulding would keep some serious contenders in check until late in the race. Despite nose wing damage the Finley Farms/CLT Logging #77 A.R.T. of Shane Stewart from Pittsboro, Indiana would get around him on lap nineteen.

Shane Stewart would end the night in second followed by Roger Crockett of Medford, Oregon in the SKS Racing/Al Parker Racing Engines/Champion Racing Oil #11 KPC after a last lap pass for third. Zack Spaulding would end his evening in fourth while the top five was completed by Steven Tiner from Visalia, California crossing the stripe fifth in the Western Metal Company/TSG Metal Recycling Disposal Inc. #37 KPC for car owner Stan Greenberg.

“These Sprint Cars have two wings for a purpose,” said Shane Stewart, “and when one of them fails they’re not a whole lot of fun to drive. The track was in great condition but I needed to have more lapped traffic if I were to have anything for Travis but he was pretty good tonight. “

“We had a pretty good car,” stated Roger Crockett, “I don’t think anyone had anything for Travis he was in his own zip code. We’re just going to move on to Cottage Grove it’s been a pretty successful place for us.”

Earlier in the evening four heat races were ran and the winners were Travis Rilat, Mill Creek, Washington’s Cam Smith in his Dave Smith Motorsports/Don Ott Racing Engines/Nelson Texturing #17 Maxim, the Linder Powdercoating /Rodgers Racing Engines #22L KPC of Central Point, Oregon pilot Garen Linder, and Justyn Cox from Clarksburg, California in the Lucas Oil Products/Rodgers Racing Engines/JRD Endeavors #5H Maxim for car owner Harley Van Dyke. Mason Moore of Princeton, California would pick up the consolation feature in his Moore Insurance Services Inc./LRB Race Products/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 A.R.T.

The series will take Independence Day off for some well deserved rest before finishing the 2013 Bully Dog Performance Speedweek Northwest presented by Contingency Connection at the Cottage Grove Speedway for two days of action. Those two dates will take place on Friday July 5th and Saturday the 6th. For more information log on to www.ascsnorthwest.com.
