Lebanon, Oregon- The Willamette Speedway will be very busy this weekend with two night of Strawberry Cup action on hand. Friday May 31st will feature the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region and DIRTcar Super Late Models. The Late Models will qualify and run heat races over the course of the evening while main events will be ran on Saturday June 1st. Also on hand Saturday will be IMCA Modifieds, Super Sports, Street Stocks, and Mini Trucks.
“Strawberry Cup is the most prestigious race at Willamette Speedway,” commented Cory Penfold, announcer at the 1/3-mile clay oval, “you ask any driver which race they want to win the most and it’s this one.”
The tradition of the Strawberry Cup is decades old going as far back as the 1960’s. In this article we look at some of the past winners in all the divisions that are set to compete this weekend.
In the last fourteen Strawberry Cups in DIRTcar Super Late Model action there have been ten different winners from 1999-2012. Trevor Glaser has won four of them while the defending champion of this race Jeremy Shank earned his second last year. David Hawkes, Greg Walters, Randy Boyd, Tim Zeller, Bruce Hipple, Jimmy Whisler, Craig Hanson, and Rick Wyatt have earned just one triumph each.
The IMCA Modifieds have been a part of Strawberry Cup since 2008. Dustin Dittman has won the last three editions while both Rob Mayea and Jesse Williamson each have one. In the last seven races there have been seven different Super Sport winners from the years 2004-10. Glen Hackney, Bud Kingsberry, David Cronk, James Slover, Russ Sell, Rick Wyatt, and Tim Debban are those seven different victors.
Since 2005 the Street Stocks have been on the bill for Strawberry Cup. There have been six different winners in eight races. Erik Jarnport has a total of three and is the only repeat winner. Ron Shinkle, Bob Kingsberry, Kevin Roberts, Adam Walker, and Kyle Yeack have won this race once. Last year was the only year the Mini Trucks has been a part of this historic event which Mark Vonsild would win.
