Clair Cup Weekend On Tap For Willamette
Clair Cup Weekend On Tap For Willamette Speedway
By Ben Deatherage
Lebanon, Oregon- This Memorial Day weekend the Willamette Speedway will be hosting the annual Clair Cup on Saturday May 25th and Sunday the 26th. The race is run in honor of longtime track owner and promoter Clair Arnold. On both days classes that will be featured include the DIRTcar Super Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Super Sports, Sportsman, and Street Stocks.
The Northwest Extreme Late Model Series will also be on hand both days to take on the DIRTcar competitors. It will mark the only time the series will be on hand at the historic 1/3-mile clay oval in 2013. Greg Walters has won two out of three races with only other winner so far this season being Collen Winebarger.
“This is a very special race for everyone one here at Willamette,” commented Chris Nofziger, General Manager of Willamette Speedway, “Clair was such a big part of this track’s history. Fans will be in for a big treat this weekend because our car counts are very good for this race.”
There have been a total of three Clair Cups since 2010 and Russ Sell won last year’s event as well as the inaugural edition making him the only multi-race winner of the prestigious race. California’s Mike Johnson is the only other winner of the Clair Cup when he would conquer the field in 2011 while driving for car owner Rob Mayea. So far in 2013 DIRTcar Super Late Model action Trevor Glaser leads the feature win column with two. Other main event winners include Joey Tanner and Russ Sell.
There has yet to be a repeat winner in IMCA Modified competition. Mark Carrell, Kyle Yeack, Jeffrey Rivers, and Dustin Dittman have thus far graced victory lane. Will the streak of different winners continue or will we see the first repeat winner this weekend?
The same case can be said for the Super Sports in the first three races of the year. Gil Pickett, Bob Jeffrey, and Brian Smith have managed to earn victories in the division that was reintroduced this year after a brief hiatus.
In the Sportsman classification former champion Todd Miller has earned the most wins so far with two. Joining him in the win column is Clyde Rood and most recently Jeff Marson. In the Street Stock ranks David Cronk has won all but one feature so far in 2013 with Bricen James winning the only other main event.
On both days the pit gate will open at 1:00 PM, front gates 3:30 PM, and racing should be getting started around 6:00 PM. Admission prices on both nights are Adults $14.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $12.00, Youths (12 and Under) $6.00, Family Pass (Two Adults and Up To Four Youths) $35.00, and Pit Passes are $25.00.
The Willamette Speedway has operated since the 1960’s and is a facility where high car counts and great racing are the norm. The venue will hosts weekly action comprising of DIRTcar Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Sports, Street Stocks, and Mini Trucks.
